STAINLESS/SANITARY/FOOD GRADE FINISHES

With experience SINCE 1945 in commercial and industrial blending, Hayes & Stolz has acquired and developed the skills necessary to manufacture Continuous Blenders with the appropriate finish for the intended application. Our DA (Pug Mill), SA, L56 and E-Z Blenders can be designed and manufactured for stainless/sanitary/food grade applications.

The following descriptions for standard finishes are from the "Hayes & Stolz Procedures for the Manufacture and Finishing of Stainless Steel Equipment". For a detailed description of each standard finish see the Technical Documents section of this web-site. While these procedures address the standards adopted by Hayes & Stolz, they are not intended to limit our ability or willingness to provide a custom finish to a customer’s own specification.

ULTRA-SANITARY STAINLESS STEEL (USSS):

Used primarily when “sanitary construction” is specified for food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries requiring stainless steel product contact surfaces and a finish with no cracks or crevices and a high degree of interior polish. Interior is polished to 120 grit final finish.

  • A. Construction Materials
    1. Stainless steel product contact surfaces (surfaces in direct contact with the material being processed or handled and/or exposed to material dust or residue).
    2. Stainless steel externals except as noted or as determined and defined by the customer. Use only stainless or plated fasteners; no unfinished carbon steel (black) fasteners.
  • B. Welding
    1. Product contact zone – Continuous TIG welds free of overlaps, cracks and surface pores.
    2. Exterior – Continuous TIG welds free of overlaps, cracks and surface pores.
  • C. Finishes
    1. Welds in the Product Contact Zone – Grind and polish welds smooth to 120 grit final finish.
    2. Exterior Welds – Remove slag and weld “spatter”.
    3. Surfaces in the Product Contact Zone – Grind all surface imperfections and manufacturing “scars” smooth and power tool polish to 120 grit final finish with a uniform “grained” appearance.
    4. Exterior Surfaces – Exterior to be “sugar” blasted to a uniform finish.
    5. Interior and exterior to be thoroughly cleaned prior to shipping to remove soil, fabrication debris and hand prints.
  • D. Paint
    1. Exterior fabricated mild steel to be cleaned, masked and painted with Steel-It stainless topcoat over rust inhibitive primer.
    2. Purchased components (bearings, reducers, motors, etc.) to be painted with Steel-It stainless topcoat over factory applied coatings.
    3. Exposed mild steel shafts and unfinished mild steel components on motors, reducers, etc. shall be protected with FDA compliant rust-inhibitive coating (grease).
  • E. General
    1. End Plate Attachment – Drive end plate to be bolted and interior seam sealed with small, continuous fusion weld at final assembly. Weld discoloration to be removed. Tail end plate to be welded.
    2. Shaft Assemblies – For strictest of sanitary applications paddle stems to be welded to the mainshaft eliminating pitch adjustment and paddle replaceability. Proper ribbon to tub wall clearance to be determined at assembly and the seal mounting plates welded-in-place to the end plates (non-adjustable). Paddles may be bolted with cap nut (acorn nuts) to minimize exposed threads in the product contact zone allowing for pitch adjustment and replaceability. However, cracks and crevices between the paddle stem and the shaft will not be eliminated and will require frequent cleaning.

SANITARY STAINLESS STEEL (SSS)

Used primarily when “sanitary construction” is specified for food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries requiring stainless steel product contact surfaces and a finish with no cracks or crevices, but not requiring the highest degree of interior polish. Interior is polished to 80 grit final finish.

  • A. Construction Materials
    1. Stainless steel product contact surfaces (surfaces in direct contact with the material being processed or handled and/or exposed to material dust or residue).
    2. Stainless steel externals except as noted or as determined and defined by the customer. Use only stainless or plated fasteners; no unfinished carbon steel (black) fasteners.
  • B. Welding
    1. Product contact zone – Continuous TIG welds free of overlaps, cracks and surface pores.
    2. Exterior – Continuous MIG welds (paying special attention to quality of weld considering that exterior will not be painted).
  • C. Finishes
    1. Welds in the Product Contact Zone – Grind and polish welds to remove weld spatter and heavy ripple only and finish with 80 grit final media.
    2. Exterior Welds – Remove slag and weld “spatter”.
    3. Surfaces in the Product Contact Zone – Grind all surface imperfections and manufacturing “scars” smooth and power tool polish to 80 grit final finish with a uniform “grained” appearance.
    4. Exterior Surfaces – Exterior to be “sugar” blasted to a uniform finish.
    5. Interior and exterior to be thoroughly cleaned prior to shipping to remove soil, fabrication debris and hand prints.
  • D. Paint
    1. Exterior fabricated mild steel to be cleaned, masked and painted with Steel-It stainless topcoat over rust inhibitive primer.
    2. Purchased components (bearings, reducers, motors, etc.) to be painted with Steel-It stainless topcoat over factory applied coatings.
    3. Exposed mild steel shafts and unfinished mild steel components on motors, reducers, etc. shall be protected with FDA compliant rust-inhibitive coating (grease).
  • E. General

Used primarily when “stainless steel construction” is specified. Commercial design shall be the same as for standard carbon steel units for non-sanitary applications. Interior and exterior finish shall be as-fabricated. The exterior of SSC-II equipment will not be painted.

  • A. Construction Materials
    1. Stainless steel product contact surfaces (surfaces in direct contact with the material being processed or handled and/or exposed to material dust or residue).
    2. Stainless steel externals except as noted or as determined and defined by the customer. Use only stainless or plated fasteners; no unfinished carbon steel (black) fasteners.
  • B. Welding
    1. Product contact zone – Continuous MIG weld.
    2. Exterior – Continuous MIG weld (paying special attention to quality of weld considering that exterior will not be painted).
  • C. Finishes
    1. Welds in the Product Contact Zone – Remove slag only.
    2. Exterior Welds – Remove slag and weld “spatter”. Special care shall be taken to avoid grinder and tool marks
    3. Surfaces in the Product Contact Zone – Mill finish, as-fabricated.
    4. Exterior Surfaces – Mill finish as-fabricated and cleaned. Special care shall be taken to avoid grinder and tool marks.
    5. Interior and exterior to be thoroughly cleaned prior to shipping to remove soil, fabrication debris and hand prints.
  • D. Paint
    1. External stainless steel is not painted. Exterior fabricated mild steel to be cleaned, masked and painted with polyurethane topcoat (standard color is SW Pillar White) over rust inhibitive primer.
    2. Purchased components (bearings, reducers, motors, cylinders, solenoid valves, limit switches, etc.) to have factory applied coatings with no additional paint required unless factory finish has been scratched or damaged.
    3. Exposed mild steel shafts and unfinished mild steel components on motors, reducers, etc. shall be protected with FDA compliant rust-inhibitive coating (grease).
  • E. General
    1. End Plate Attachment – Both end plates bolted.
    2. Shaft Assemblies – Paddle stems bolted to mainshaft allowing for pitch adjustment and replaceability. Seal mounting plates are bolted allowing for tub wall clearance adjustment as paddles (ribbons) wear.

Used primarily when “stainless steel product contact surfaces” is specified. Commercial design shall be the same as for standard carbon steel units for non-sanitary applications. Interior and exterior finish shall be as-fabricated. The exterior of SSC-I equipment will be painted.

  • A. Construction Materials
    1. Stainless steel product contact surfaces (surfaces in direct contact with the material being processed or handled and/or exposed to material dust or residue).
    2. Mild steel externals (stiffeners, brackets, supports, drive guards, etc.).
  • B. Welding
    1. Product contact zone – Continuous MIG weld.
    2. Exterior – MIG skip-weld with seams caulked between welds.
  • C. Finishes
    1. Welds in the Product Contact Zone – Remove slag only.
    2. Exterior Welds – Remove slag and prep for paint.
    3. Surfaces in the Product Contact Zone – Mill finish, as-fabricated.
    4. Exterior Surfaces – Mill finish as-fabricated and prep for paint.
    5. Interior and exterior to be thoroughly cleaned prior to shipping to remove soil, fabrication debris and hand prints.
  • D. Paint
    1. Complete exterior to be cleaned and painted with industrial polyurethane topcoat (standard color is SW Pillar White) over rust inhibitive primer.
  • E. General
    1. End Plate Attachment – Both end plates bolted.
    2. Shaft Assemblies – Paddle stems bolted to mainshaft allowing for pitch adjustment and replaceability. Seal mounting plates are bolted allowing for tub wall clearance adjustment as paddles (ribbons) wear.

SPECIAL DUTY APPLICATIONS

In addition to the stainless/sanitary/food grade applications Hayes & Stolz offers options for several special duty applications:

For applications involving abrasive products, H&S Continuous Blenders can be designed to incorporate abrasion-resistant paddles and critical wear areas. The paddle tips (and leading edges of ribbons on E-Z Blenders) can also be hard-faced with a welded overlay.

E-Z Blenders used to blend “sticky” ingredients can be furnished with UHMW liners on the u-trough housing, shaft, cross-arms and paddle faces for easier release. (Illustrated in photo to the left.)

COVER OPTIONS

For u-trough style blenders (DA, SA and E-Z Blenders) covers are provided for protection required by OSHA from the moving parts and for a means to contain/control dust from the blending process. They can also be designed to include ports for dry and/or liquid ingredient addition, dust pick-up ports, and access for inspection and cleaning. H&S blender covers can be custom designed to allow for the best integration with the customer’s operation.

LIQUID ADDITION

For processes that require the addition of liquids, Hayes & Stolz can provide liquid injectors, manifolds and/or spray nozzles. The type and location for liquid addition will be determined for optimum performance for the application.

SHAFT SEALS

Hayes & Stolz offers a variety of seal options for the main shaft penetrations through the end plates. The selection of seals that are properly suited for the blending application is important in order to minimize leakage and reduce premature shaft wear that results in expensive repairs and down time.

The H & S Split Block Seal, for dry blending in commercial (non-sanitary) applications, consists of a UHMW body, steel front and back plates and two wraps of ½" braided teflon packing. The split design allows for easy disassembly for cleaning and maintenance.

The H & S Flanged Gland Seal, for dry blending in commercial (non-sanitary) applications, consists of a steel body, steel back plate and one wrap of ½" braided teflon packing. Construction materials can be mild steel or stainless steel. The split design allows for easy disassembly for cleaning and maintenance. The body acts as a plunger against the braided packing material allowing for some adjustment as the packing wears.

The H & S Packing Gland Seal (with or without air purge) is designed for dry, slurry or wet blending in commercial or sanitary applications. The housing and plunger are available of machined stainless steel or UHMW with stainless steel front plate, back plate and pusher plate. For dry applications the seal comes standard with multiple wraps of ½" braided teflon packing. Stacked v-rings are used for liquid applications. The split design allows for easy disassembly for cleaning and maintenance. The plunger design allows for adjustment as the packing material wears.

MISCELLANEOUS OPTIONS

Hayes & Stolz has extensive knowledge of numerous blending applications for many industries and is uniquely qualified to recommend the right features and options to enhance the performance of our blenders and improve blending productivity.

Heating and Cooling Jackets
Hayes & Stolz blenders can be furnished with heating/cooling coils or with insulation and steel jackets to satisfy temperature-sensitive blending applications. Coils can be used with heated water or low-pressure steam for heating, or with chilled water or ambient water for cooling. Jacketed blenders can be furnished with blanket type insulation or spray insulation and with bolted or fully welded jackets. Coils and jackets are available on commercial or stainless/sanitary/food grade blenders.

Lifting Bars
Lifting bars are steel bars added to the ribbons of EZ Blenders parallel to the main shaft to introduce a tumbling action to the product being blended. They are recommended for blending applications for liquid, slurry or low-density products, and can be added to commercial or sanitary (food grade) blenders.

Support Structures and Platforms
The installation of a blending line sometimes requires a support structure to elevate the blender to clear other equipment, or a work platform around the blender for maintenance or to hand-add ingredients. Hayes & Stolz has the engineering and manufacturing expertise to help with the design of structures or to manufacture to a customer’s design. Platforms are designed and manufactured with OSHA compliant handrails and with ladders or stairs as required. All structures and platforms are custom designed to the installation requirements.
